The Roof Is on Fire

How to Cool Down Hot Roofs

With the summer season approaching, you know that you will be dealing with a hot roof. Extreme heat can cause damage to roofs over time, and before you know it, you will be spending on a new roofing construction. Protecting your roof from the extreme heat coming from the sun is important to preserve the lifespan of your roof and prevent early replacement. If you want to know how you can do this, here are some tips that you can use:

Roll Out Some Modified Bitumen

One of the best ways to cool down hot roofs is by using what we call a modified bitumen roof. These are membranes made up of sheets of rubberized or plastic asphalt and are held together with rolled reinforced fabric. These are fastened to the roof using a cool adhesive or hot asphalt. Traditional modified bitumen is usually black or gray and coupled with a small solar reflecting property. What this means is that rather than absorbing all of that heat, they will reflect it. Also, applying a small white coating over the surface of the bitumen can raise the reflective power of the surface itself. You can easily find these bitumen at your local hardware store, or you can call a professional roofer that offers application services.

Add A Cool Coating

Cool coatings for roofs are sprayed, brushed, or rolled on top of an existing flat or low-sloping roof and will create a bright white and paint-like surface that is reflective.  The cool coating is used more in re-roofing projects rather than a new installation, and the application itself is fairly cheap at around 75 cents to a dollar per square foot.
